Breaking Free from the Lies That Hold You Back

Have you ever wondered what God really thinks about you? Many of us carry around beliefs about ourselves that don't align with how our Creator sees us. These false beliefs can keep us trapped in cycles of shame, fear, and self-condemnation that prevent us from stepping into the purpose God has for our lives.

What Are Your God Dreams?

While our childhood dreams of becoming professional athletes or movie stars may not have been realistic, what about the dreams God has placed in your heart?

Ecclesiastes 3:11 tells us that God "has planted eternity in men's hearts and minds, a divinely implanted sense of a purpose working through the ages which nothing under the sun but God alone can satisfy."

God has dreams for you. You're not a mistake or forgotten.

Proverbs 16:9 reminds us that "the heart of man plans his ways, but the Lord establishes His steps." God wants us to connect with these divine dreams He's placed within us, and then He will direct our steps to get there.

Why Did Christ Set Us Free?

Galatians 5:1 declares, "For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery." Why did Christ set us free? For freedom itself - so we could be free enough to be who He has called us to be and fulfill those God dreams planted in our hearts.

When Jesus began His ministry, He read from Isaiah 61, declaring His mission: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor" (Luke 4:18-19 ESV).

Jesus was announcing the year of jubilee - a time when all debts were canceled, slaves were set free, and everything was restored to how it was supposed to be. The good news is that we don't have to wait for a special year - today is always the acceptable year of the Lord.

What Does True Freedom Look Like?

Freedom isn't defined by what's absent, such as pain or sin. It's defined by who's present.

2nd Corinthians 3:17 says, "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." When we get into the presence of the Lord, all our needs are met.

Jesus told His disciples, "I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world" (John 16:33 ESV).

The enemy tries to interpret our lives through the lens of tribulation and pain, but Jesus came to set us free not just from pain, but from lack of peace.

Where Do Our Bondages Come From?

The "kakos" (Greek word meaning harmful, injurious things) in our lives comes from two sources: things we were taught or things we caught

Taught might include:

  • Negative words spoken over us ("You'll never amount to anything")
  • Bad doctrine about God being angry or distant
  • False beliefs about our worth or capabilities

Caught refers to:

  • Experiences of abuse (physical, emotional, spiritual)
  • Traumatic events that shaped our self-perception
  • Harmful situations that left lasting wounds

Breaking the Cycle of Hurt

These experiences create a destructive cycle:
  1. A traumatic event occurs
  2. We believe a lie about ourselves based on that event
  3. We become our own defender to protect against future pain
  4. This defensive posture affects how we relate to others and God
  5. When relationships bring pain, it reinforces the original lie
  6. The cycle repeats
But God wants to break this cycle. Sometimes we don't even realize we've been harmed or understand why we react in certain ways.

The Real Problem Isn't Sin

Sin is not the ultimate problem because sin has been dealt with.

Romans 8:2 declares, "For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death." Jesus didn't come to make bad people good - He came to make spiritually dead people alive.

The real issue is our source of truth. Do we believe what God says about us, or do we believe what the enemy has reinterpreted our situations to mean?

Romans 8:1 states, "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (ESV). If there's no condemnation from Christ, where is self-condemnation coming from?

Changing Your Source of Truth

First John 3:20 reminds us that "even when our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart." When we're self-condemning, we're not being who God called us to be. We're allowing lies to clog up our minds and emotions.

The power of the Holy Spirit breaks the lies so we can see truth. Jesus said, "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free"
(John 8:32 ESV). The Holy Spirit is called the "Spirit of truth" (John 15:26), and He bears witness about Jesus - including the truth that we're called to be like Christ.

How Do We Get Free?

Freedom isn't accomplished by trying to remove sin from our lives, but by being filled with God's presence. Just as pouring water into a glass displaces all the air, God's presence drives out what we don't want in our lives.

This is why we emphasize getting into God's presence - it drives out wrong thinking, lies, and connects us with the peace that passes understanding. If any generation has needed this, it's our anxious, fearful generation.

Life Application

This week, challenge yourself to identify one lie you've believed about yourself that contradicts what God says about you. Instead of trying to fight the lie through willpower, commit to spending time in God's presence daily through prayer, worship, and reading His Word. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the truth about who you are in Christ.

Questions for reflection:

  • What negative beliefs about yourself do you hold that God would never say about you?
  • Are you trying to be your own defender instead of trusting God to defend you?
  • How might believing God's truth about you change the way you relate to others and step into His purposes for your life?
Remember, God has much more faith in you than you have in yourself. He sees the truth and declares it over you. You are called to be like Christ, you are the temple of the Holy Spirit, and you are deeply loved by your Creator. It's time to let His presence fill you and drive out every lie that has held you back from your God dreams.
