Who Are You in Christ? Understanding Your True Identity and Freedom in Jesus
Freedom is one of the most powerful words in the human experience. As Americans, we celebrate political freedom. But there is a deeper, more personal freedom that every believer has been called to walk in: the freedom that comes through Jesus Christ. And yet, so many Christians are not living in it.
What Does the Fourth of July Have to Do With Your Faith?
The Declaration of Independence, signed in 1776, was not primarily a celebration of liberty. It was a list of grievances against King George III. The colonists were being controlled, taxed, restricted, and oppressed. Their spirits were being broken so they would give up on the dream of freedom.
To gain their freedom, they had to fight for it. And then they had to keep fighting to sustain it.
As President Ronald Reagan once said, "The price of freedom may be high, but it's never so costly as the loss of freedom."
Freedom is never free. It always costs somebody something. Since 1775, over 1.3 million Americans have died in military conflicts. The Department of Defense spends roughly $850 billion annually to keep that freedom protected.
Thomas Jefferson said it plainly: the price of freedom is eternal vigilance.

How Does This Apply to Your Life as a Believer?
Just as King George III worked to break the spirits of the colonists, the enemy works to break yours. He uses every opportunity to control your life, remove your hope, and keep you from living in your true identity as a child of God.
Two of his greatest strategies are fear and lies. Today, the focus is on lies, because lies are what keep so many believers from walking in the freedom Jesus purchased for them.
Galatians 5:13 says, "For you were called to freedom, brothers." (Galatians 5:13, English Standard Version (ESV))
That word "called" in the original language means more than a casual invitation. It means you are named free. Freedom is part of your identity.

Why Do Christians Keep Going Back to Bondage?
Most people do not choose bondage outright. They yield to it slowly. A little disappointment here. A little pressure there. A focus on past mistakes. Before long, they have drifted far from the freedom God intended for them.
What you focus on is what you move toward. If you keep your eyes on the past, on your failures, on what others have said about you, that is the direction you will drift.
The children of Israel are a powerful example of this. God called them out of nothing and made them a nation with a special purpose. But time and again, they forgot who they were. They mixed with pagan nations, adopted their values, and ended up in slavery. Every time they strayed from God's direction, bondage followed.
In John 8, Jesus is speaking to Jewish leaders who claimed they had never been enslaved to anyone, even while living under Roman occupation. They had become so accustomed to bondage that it felt normal.
Jesus responded clearly: "Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." (John 8:34-36, English Standard Version (ESV))

What Does the Bible Say About Who You Really Are?
Truth is not what your past says. It is not what your family said. It is not what your failures say. Truth is what God says about you.
Here are six truths about your identity in Christ:
Here are six truths about your identity in Christ:
1. You Are a Child of God
You are loved and accepted into the family of the most high, all-powerful, eternal God. No matter what rejection you have experienced, you are welcomed into His kingdom. There is a seat at the table for you.
2. Christ Has Made You Free
Jesus destroyed every work of the enemy. He took the keys of death, hell, and the grave. He has made you completely forgiven. Romans 8:1 reminds us there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Your past does not get to define you, and it does not get to speak to your future.
3. You Are a New Creation
Old things have passed away. All things have become new. You have everything you need to live free in your true identity.
Romans 8:2 says, "For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death." (Romans 8:2, English Standard Version (ESV))

4. You Are Free to Stand Against the Enemy
You have spiritual armor. You have the shield of faith to quench every fiery dart. You are free to take thoughts captive and bring them into submission to the lordship of Jesus Christ. Nothing in the natural realm or the spiritual realm can keep you from being who God created you to be.
5. You Have a Purpose and Are Equipped for It
Ephesians 2 says we are God's workmanship, His masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus for good works that He prepared in advance for us to walk in. Even before you were born, God planned your identity, your destiny, and the good works you would do to fulfill it.
Great things do not always look like being on a stage or traveling the world. Being a faithful intercessor, speaking truth into your grandchildren's lives, being a light where you work, seeing a need and filling it: these are great things in the kingdom of God.

6. You Are a Victorious Ambassador of the Kingdom
You carry authority with you every single day. You are more than a conqueror in Christ Jesus. The same Spirit that raised Christ from the dead lives in you. You have resurrection power. You are not damaged goods. You are not hopeless. You are first run, top of the line, equipped and sent.
What Is the Enemy's Strategy Against Your Identity?
Lies always bring bondage. Truth always sets free. The enemy does not have authority over your life. He cannot do anything in your world without your yielding to it. Galatians 5:1 says, "For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery." (Galatians 5:1, English Standard Version (ESV))
A stronghold is a core lie supported by other lies. It might sound like: "I'm not good enough." "My past disqualifies me." "It might work for others, but not for me." These are lies from the enemy designed to keep you from walking in the purpose God has for your life.
Time, money, and opportunity do not get to define when or how you fulfill God's purposes. God is the only one who gets to speak to your future.

You Are God's Plan A
God placed you on this earth, at this exact moment in history, with divine purpose in mind. He could have chosen any other time for you to exist, but He chose now. You are God's plan A when it comes to seeing people come to Jesus Christ.
Free people free people. That is part of your calling. God works in you so He can work through you.

Life Application
This week, identify one lie you have been believing about yourself, your past, or your future. Write it down. Then find a scripture that speaks the truth of God over that specific lie and declare it out loud every day this week. Do not just think it. Speak it. Take that thought captive and bring it into submission to what God says about you.
Ask yourself these questions as you reflect:
- What is one lie I have accepted about my identity that does not line up with what God says about me?
- In what area of my life have I slowly yielded my freedom, and what would it look like to stand firm there this week?
- Am I living as though I am God's masterpiece with a purpose, or am I letting my past, my failures, or someone else's words define me?
- Who in my life needs to hear the truth about their identity in Christ, and am I willing to be the one to share it?
You were called to freedom. Stand firm in it.
