When the Enemy Comes Like a Flood: Finding Hope in Spiritual Drought
Have you ever felt like you've done everything you know to do, yet the promises of God seem distant? When circumstances flood our lives with discouragement, it's easy to fall into despair. But God has a different plan - one where His Spirit moves like a flood to drive away the enemy and restore what has been stolen.
What Does It Mean to Be Perplexed But Not in Despair?
The apostle Paul writes in
2 Corinthians 4:8: "We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed" (ESV).
2 Corinthians 4:8: "We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed" (ESV).
The word "perplexed" in Greek means not knowing which way to turn. It's that feeling when you've exhausted all your options and find yourself saying, "Lord, I've done everything I know to do. What's next?"
Being perplexed is different from being confused. Confusion isn't from God - He's not the author of confusion. But perplexity? That's simply reaching the end of our human understanding while maintaining trust in God's sovereignty.

The Difference Between Perplexity and Despair
Despair means losing all hope. Even when we're perplexed about our next steps, we don't lose hope because we trust in God. We may not see the way forward, but we know the One who does.
How Does God Respond When the Enemy Attacks?
Isaiah 59:19 reveals a powerful truth about God's response to enemy attacks. The traditional reading says:
"When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him."
"When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him."
But consider this alternative reading, moving the punctuation: "
When the enemy comes in, like a flood the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him."
When the enemy comes in, like a flood the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him."
God Moves Like a Flood
The moment the enemy shows up - not after we're drowning in his attacks - God responds like a flood. The word "standard" doesn't just mean a flag; it means to drive away or cause to flee. Like a flood, the Lord causes the enemy to flee from you, your promises, your dreams, and your family.
The English Standard Version makes this even clearer:
"For he will come like a rushing stream, which the wind of the Lord drives" (Isaiah 59:19 ESV).
It's not the enemy flooding us - it's God flooding the enemy.
"For he will come like a rushing stream, which the wind of the Lord drives" (Isaiah 59:19 ESV).
It's not the enemy flooding us - it's God flooding the enemy.
What Can We Learn from David's Response to Crisis?
First Samuel 30 tells the story of David returning from battle to find his camp raided, his people's families taken captive. The people were so angry they spoke of stoning him. But notice David's response:
"David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because all the people were bitter in soul, each for his sons and daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God" (1 Samuel 30:6 ESV).
How to Strengthen Yourself in the Lord
David didn't sit and pout or blame God. Instead, he encouraged himself in the Lord through worship. When circumstances look overwhelming, we must have enough of God's Word and the presence of Jesus within us to encourage ourselves.
This happens through worship - choosing to praise God regardless of what we see. Faith doesn't deny that problems exist; faith declares that our God is bigger than any problem.

The Power of Inquiry After Worship
After strengthening himself, David inquired of the Lord: "Shall I pursue after this band? Shall I overtake them?" God's answer was clear:
"Pursue, for you shall surely overtake and shall surely rescue" (1 Samuel 30:8 ESV).
Notice the order: worship first, then prayer. We enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise, even when approaching boldly before the throne.

What Does It Mean to Pursue, Overtake, and Recover All?
God's command to David was threefold:
The story's ending is remarkable:
"Nothing was missing, whether small or great, sons or daughters, spoil or anything that had been taken. David brought back all" (1 Samuel 30:19 ESV).
- Pursue - Don't give up on what the enemy has stolen
- Overtake - You will catch up to and surpass the enemy
- Recover all - Nothing will remain lost

What Has the Enemy Stolen from You?
Perhaps the enemy has raided your camp and stolen:
It's time to pursue, overtake, and recover what belongs to you.
- God-given dreams that now seem impossible
- Family members who have walked away from faith
- Hope for your future
- Joy in your circumstances
It's time to pursue, overtake, and recover what belongs to you.
How Do We Hear the Sound of Abundance in Drought?
The prophet Elijah declared an end to a three-and-a-half-year drought by saying,
"I hear the sound of the abundance of rain" (1 Kings 18:41).
When his servant looked for clouds, he saw nothing. Seven times Elijah sent him to look. Six times he returned with no sign of rain.
But on the seventh time, a small cloud appeared, and soon the heavens opened with abundant rain.

Going Up Again
When it comes to:
The message is clear: Go up again.
Don't stop looking for the cloud. Don't stop believing. Don't stop pursuing what God has promised. Even when you see nothing, go up again
- Those God-given dreams
- Praying for lost family members
- Believing God will fulfill His purposes in your life
- Trusting that breakthrough is coming
The message is clear: Go up again.
Don't stop looking for the cloud. Don't stop believing. Don't stop pursuing what God has promised. Even when you see nothing, go up again
Life Application
This week, choose to strengthen yourself in the Lord when circumstances try to flood you with discouragement. Instead of focusing on what the enemy appears to be doing, worship God and declare His goodness over your situation.
Take time to inquire of the Lord about what He wants you to pursue. What has the enemy stolen that God wants you to recover? What dream, relationship, or promise needs your renewed faith and action?
Questions for Reflection:
Remember, God is always on the move, even when we can't see it. Just because the answer hasn't come yet doesn't mean it's not coming. Keep pursuing, keep believing, and keep listening for the sound of abundance - because your breakthrough may be just one more "go up again" away.
