The Power of Small Things: Obedience, Unity, and Prayer

Legendary basketball coach John Wooden understood something profound about success. When recruiting the best players in the nation to UCLA, he didn't start with shooting drills or scrimmages. Instead, he sat each new recruit down and demonstrated the correct way to put on socks and shoes. Why? Because he knew that small things matter tremendously - a blister from improperly fitted socks could throw off a player's balance, affecting their shot, their rebounds, and potentially causing injury.

This principle applies powerfully to our spiritual lives. As believers and as a church, we must pay attention to the small things that can either propel us forward or knock us off track. The devil may be in the details, but so is salvation.

What Does the Bible Say About Small Things That Matter?

In Acts chapter 1, we find Jesus' disciples following His final instructions before ascending to heaven. They were told to return to Jerusalem and wait for the promise of the Holy Spirit. What happened next reveals three seemingly small but incredibly powerful principles:

"Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away. And when they had entered, they went to the upper room where they were staying... All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers." - Acts 1:12-14 (ESV)

In this passage, we discover three foundational elements: obedience, unity, and prayer. These may seem simple, but they form the blueprint for spiritual breakthrough.

Why Is Obedience So Important in Faith?

The disciples didn't choose their preferred location or make excuses. They returned to Jerusalem exactly as Jesus instructed. This demonstrates a crucial truth: God looks for obedience before He pours out blessing.

Jesus made this clear when He said,
"'If you love me, you will keep my commandments'" - John 14:15 (ESV).

Our obedience demonstrates our love for Him. It's easy to say we love God, but do our actions reflect that love?

What Holds Us Back from Obedience?

Often, what prevents us from walking in obedience is indifference - a lack of enthusiasm or concern for spiritual things. This isn't just a personal issue; it's the spirit of our age. We become comfortable with mediocrity, settling for "I'm fine" or "I'm good" when we're actually spiritually lukewarm.

Jesus addressed this directly to the church in Laodicea:
"'I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth'" - Revelation 3:15-16 (ESV).

How Does Unity Impact Spiritual Breakthrough?

The text emphasizes that the disciples were together "with one accord." Unity isn't just about getting along; it's about moving together toward God's purposes with shared passion and commitment.

When we're indifferent or lukewarm, we miss opportunities to engage fully in worship, to receive from God's Word, and to participate in prayer. We become spectators rather than participants in what God wants to do.

What Does Spiritual Indifference Look Like?

Indifference manifests when we:
  • Remain disengaged during worship
  • Listen to God's Word without allowing it to transform us
  • Avoid prayer opportunities
  • Prioritize other things above our relationship with God

This lukewarm state is dangerous because, as Revelation 3:17 warns, we think we're "'rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing'—and do not know that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked'" (ESV).

Why Is Prayer Essential for Breakthrough?

The disciples devoted themselves to prayer. This wasn't casual or occasional prayer, but dedicated, persistent seeking of God. Prayer is where we connect with God's heart and align ourselves with His purposes.

When we're at peace before the Lord, we can hear His voice clearly. Prayer flows naturally when we're in right relationship with Him, not striving or anxious, but resting in His presence.

How Do We Overcome Spiritual Lukewarmness?

The solution to indifference is found in Revelation 3:19: "'Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline. So be zealous and repent'" (ESV).
We must:
  • Recognize our need for deeper connection with God
  • Repent of spiritual complacency
  • Choose to be zealous and passionate in our pursuit of Him
  • Prioritize our relationship with God above all else

What Lessons Can We Learn from Israel's History?

The Book of Ezra provides a powerful example of what happens when God's people lose focus. Despite experiencing God's miraculous deliverance from Egypt and receiving the Promised Land, Israel repeatedly turned away from God. They intermarried with pagan nations, adopted their gods, and even erected altars to Baal in God's temple - a god whose worship included child sacrifice.

After hundreds of years of this cycle, God allowed their enemies to destroy Jerusalem and the temple, carrying the people into exile. Yet even after God miraculously moved a pagan king's heart to send them back and rebuild the temple, they fell into the same patterns that had gotten them into trouble originally.

Life Application

The blueprint for spiritual breakthrough isn't complicated, but it requires intentionality. This week, commit to practicing these three foundational elements:

Choose obedience over convenience. When God speaks to you through His Word, worship, or prayer, respond immediately rather than making excuses or delaying. Obedience demonstrates love and positions you for God's blessing.

Pursue unity over indifference. Engage fully in corporate worship, be present during teaching, and participate in prayer opportunities. Don't be a spectator in your spiritual life.

Prioritize prayer over busyness. Set aside dedicated time to be at peace before the Lord, listening for His voice and aligning your heart with His purposes.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Am I truly passionate for God, or have I settled into spiritual indifference?
  • What areas of my life need to come under obedience to God's Word?
  • How can I more fully engage in unity with other believers?
  • What needs to change in my prayer life to move from casual to devoted?
Remember, it's often the small things that make the biggest difference. Just as Coach Wooden knew that properly fitted socks could determine championship success, these three simple practices - obedience, unity, and prayer - can position us for the spiritual breakthrough God desires to bring.
